MAIN - VOYAGEUR MAPS

Most portages on Voyageur Maps are rated by difficulty on a scale of easy L1 to difficult L10. The ratings are based on field research and reflect portage length, elevation changes, trail conditions, likelihood of water/mud on the trail, landing conditions, etc. Conditions in the Boundary Waters are always changing, but the L1 to L10 ratings can be very helpful for trip planning.
Each Voyageur Map has lake-specific data on the species of fish and relevant abundance.
Northern Minnesota and the Boundary Waters have been populated for thousands of years. Each Voyageur Map includes short blurbs on human history of the region.
The back of each Voyageur Map includes a basic planning map with index for deciding on your next great route.
The northern forests and waters of the Boundary Waters are home to special cold-adapted ecosystems. Each Voyageur Map provides basic natural history information for the area on the map.
Voyageur Maps are printed on a fully waterproof media that is impermeable to water. Get them as wet as you want and they'll be fine.
Voyageur Maps now incorporate campsite numbers for each designated campsite. These unique identifier numbers, primarily based upon Forest Service identifiers, allow users to keep track of where they've traveled.
The Boundary Waters is an area of rich geological history ancient underwater volcanoes to the advance and retreat of glaciers over the last eons. Voyageur Maps include brief localized geologic information for each map.

The entire BWCA is covered with just ten Voyageur Maps, and the maps are laid out so that as few maps as possible are necessary for most trips. This allows most visitors to see their whole journey on just one or two maps and bring along fewer maps.
The Boundary Waters ecosystem is shaped by fire. The fire history of the Boundary Waters is fascinating, and exploring recently burned areas is a chance to see a changing forest with new species of plants and animals, including the best blueberry patches. Each Voyageur Map includes the approximate boundaries of forest fires, and dates of the fires. We update this information with each printed version (so every 3 or so years).
